Attorney Generals Office - Defending your Rights
The Attorney General's Civil Rights Bureau enforces state and federal civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination in Illinois. The bureau also advocates for legislation to strengthen the laws and participates in community outreach.
The Disability Rights Bureau enforces the Illinois Environmental Barriers Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act in Illinois and strives to ensure access to buildings and services for people with disabilities by investigating complaints and to resolving violations through mediation and litigation. In addition, the Disability Rights Bureau provides advocacy, information and referral services to people with disabilities.
The Immigrant Assistance Program was established to ensure that state government is aware of the needs of Illinois' immigrant population and the barriers which may prevent immigrants from seeking and obtaining government services. The Immigrant Assistance Program involves the coordination of the provision of services by the Office of the Attorney General and provision of referrals to other government agencies as appropriate.
The Attorney General's office handles a number of issues relating to Labor and Employment . In an effort to better serve working families, Attorney General Madigan appointed the first-ever Labor Liaison. The Attorney General's Office also handles a large number of cases referred by the Department of Labor and defends the state and its agencies against labor discrimination claims.
The Attorney General's Veterans Rights Bureau is dedicated to ensuring that veterans receive the benefits they have earned by serving our country in the military. The bureau provides veterans with the information they need to understand their rights and programs to help obtain them.
Educational and Labor Relations Board
The IELRB is the state agency administering the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Act, which establishes the right of educational employees to organize and bargain collectively. Some of the methods the IELRB employs to protect these rights are conducting secret ballot elections to ascertain educational employees' preferences regarding union representation; certifying and clarifying bargaining units; investigating, hearing and remedying unfair labor practices by educational employers and unions; and assisting parties engaged in mediation and arbitration.

Department of Human Rights
The Department of Human Rights administers the Illinois Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status (with regard to employment ), age 40 and over, marital status, physical or mental handicap, military service, unfavorable military discharge, and sexual orientation.
Illinois Labor Relations Board
The Illinois Labor Relations Board is the State agency which administers the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act, the primary law governing relations between unions and public employers. The statute guarantees the right of employees to organize and to bargain collectively with their employers or to refrain from all such activity.
Illinois Workers Compensation Commission
Workers' compensation is a no-fault system of benefits paid by employers to workers who experience job-related injuries or diseases. The Commission operates the state court system for workers' compensation cases. Cases are first tried by an arbitrator, whose decisions may be reviewed by a panel of three commissioners.
Illinois Board of Education
The board sets educational policies and guidelines for public and private schools, preschool through grade 12, as well as vocational education. It analyzes the aims, needs and requirements of education and recommends legislation to the General Assembly and Governor for the benefit of the more than 2 million school children in Illinois.
